Offit drew accolades from all corners last year: He was honored by the Biotechnology Industry Organization with the 2011 Biotech Humanitarian Award; by the Association of American Medical Colleges, which presented him with the David E. Rogers Award for his major contributions for improving the health and healthcare; and by the National Academies, which elected him to its prestigious Institute of Medicine.
My Hero: "Maurice Hilleman. He was the inventor of nine of the current 14 vaccines in use today. Because he worked for a pharmaceutical company, no one knows about him. We want our heroes to come from academia. But he was brilliant and changed the world. He probably saved more lives than any other scientist in the 20th century."
