As chair of the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support committee, Berg helped lead the AHA’s changes to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) guidelines. Now, in cardiac emergencies, bystanders and trained rescuers should first do chest compressions, then check the airway and, finally, begin breathing into the victim’s mouth. CPR guidelines are revised every five years to incorporate the most current research, including Berg’s.
